Description

Orange Cardamom Morning Buns are soft, fluffy pastries infused with zesty orange and aromatic cardamom. Perfect for breakfast or brunch, these treats will brighten any morning.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk (warm)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 large eggs
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, warm the whole milk until lukewarm.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk and active dry yeast. Let sit for about five minutes until frothy.
  3. Add melted butter, granulated sugar, eggs, orange zest, ground cardamom, and half of the flour. Mix until combined.
  4. Gradually add remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a floured surface and knead for about eight minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm spot until doubled in size (about one hour).
  6. Punch down the risen dough gently to release air bubbles. Roll out into a rectangle about half an inch thick.
  7. Cut into squares or rectangles and roll each piece tightly from one end to another.
  8. Place shaped buns on a greased baking sheet or muffin tins. Cover and let rise again until puffed (about thirty minutes).
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for about twenty minutes or until golden brown.
  10. While buns cool slightly on wire racks, whisk together powdered sugar and orange juice until smooth.
  11. Drizzle glaze generously over warm buns before serving.
